Imitation Vanilla Flavor and Bibingka

Bibingka

Filipino food isn't as popular as Chinese or Thai food, but it is just as good. One Filipino food my family is particularly fond of is Bibingka. Bibingka is a rice cake style dessert which has a milky, vanilla coconut custard flavor. It is rich and creamy like pudding, has a crunchy top coat and is chewy. We have never seen it at the supermarket, but are fortunate that have relatives or my husband bake it for us. The ingredients for Bibingka vary, and my husband uses butter, sweet rice flour, sugar, evaporated milk, egg, coconut milk and vanilla to make it. My husband has baked so much Bibingka recently that he ran out of real vanilla extract; so he picked up some imitation vanilla flavor at the supermarket. As you can imagine, I was … [Read more...]

Yoplait Simplait Yogurt, flavor review

Yoplait Simplait

Yoplait Simplait is "simply" the best non-Greek yogurt I have had. It has a wonderful custardy/creamy texture, the perfect tartness, a light cream cheese undertone and delicious flavors of jammy strawberry and buttery vanilla. I am in Awe! In general, processed foods have lengthy ingredient statements that confuse us consumers. This kind of thing keeps most of us preparing our own family meals. In one of my food science classes, the professor used a microwave dinner ingredient statement to explain additives. This microwave meal had 68 ingredients. How are we supposed to decipher all this information? Six simple ingredients is the Yoplait Simplait label, but flavor scientists know otherwise. Flavors can consist of one to several … [Read more...]

Jet-Puffed Mallow Bits, Vanilla & Peppermint Flavor Review

Jet Puffed Mallow Bits

Jet -Puffed mallow bits are for those of us who eat all the marshmallows (marbits) out of Lucky Charms and nibble on the marshmallow packs that come with instant hot chocolate mix. I'm one of "those" people and I'm extremely grateful that Kraft decided to launch this product and that I can buy more at my local Target. Mallow bits come with serving suggestions: sprinkle on hot chocolate or ice cream, but the are a tasty treat on their own. The Peppermint ones are naturally flavored, beautifully colored, perfectly balanced and perfectly flavored.  I'm in awe.  The vanilla mallow bits use artificial flavor and are yummy at first, but leave a bitter aftertaste if over consumed.  Still, I'm impressed. Perhaps I shouldn't have over consumed, … [Read more...]

Greek Yogurt, Vanilla Flavored products

Greek Yogurt Vanilla flavored products

The yogurt aisle at the supermarket in the US has changed. In 2010, Greek yogurt accounted for 20% of total yogurt sales. (Chicago Tribune March 16, 2012).  Greek yogurt has a creamier texture, higher protein content, tarter/less sweet taste and higher cost than traditional yogurt. The consumer will pay more for this yogurt; in some cases $0.30-0.80 more per cup. If you are relatively new to Greek yogurt, following are taste comparisons of some of  the vanilla flavor products on the market. Greek Gods is my favorite product. I choose the low-fat version of this yogurt flavored with vanilla cinnamon orange.  It reminds me of a custard. Greek Gods makes a truly delicious, treat like product.  All flavors in this product are truly natural … [Read more...]
