Trident Layers Juicy Berry & Tangy Tangerine sugar free gum, flavor review

Trident Layers Juicy Berry Tangy Tangerine gum

Trident Layers gum is my daughter's  favorite gum. She loves the juicy, fruity flavor and the colored layers. She calls it the "sandwich gum" and jumps up and down when I give her a piece. The front label of Trident Layers reads "with real fruit flavor".  What does that mean?  Sugar free chewing gum is not natural.  Sugar free gum is an artificially flavored, sweetened, and colored edible rubber material. Its benefits are dental (does not promote tooth decay) and breathe freshening.   The ingredients in Trident Layers are: gum base (rubber) maltitol, maltitol syrup, sorbitol, mannitol(sweeteners that do not promote tooth decay) acesulfame potassium , aspartame, sucralose (artificial high potency sweeteners) Blue 2 … [Read more...]

Wrigley’s 5, Cobalt cooling peppermint sugar-free gum now in a jar

Wrigley's 5 COBALT in a jar

Wrigley's 5 Cobalt cooling peppermint sugar-free gum is an extremely popular gum. I had several requests to copy this flavor when I was in the industry. Wrigley decided it was popular enough that it would need a dragee form (candy coated pellet gum) and a jar. Thank you Wrigley! The taste of the candy coated pellet gum is a little different from the stick form of Wrigley's 5 Cobalt. The pellet form has much more initial cooling character, less sweet and slightly oxidized (pine needle character). It's still a great gum to freshen your breath, but harsher than the stick form of Wrigley's 5 Cobalt. I'm interested in seeing Wrigley's 5 Rain (Spearmint) in a jar as well. Rain is one of my very most favorite gums.       … [Read more...]

Extra Dessert Delights Sugar Free Gum, Root Beer Float Flavor

Extra Rootbeer Float sugar free gum

Root beer floats are a favorite summer treat in the United States. Believe it or not, root beer is not enjoyed by all cultures and countries. Native Americans introduced root beer and made it using birch bark or wintergreen(characterized by methyl salicylate).  http://tiny.cc/mp4ogw. Most of the world associates the taste of wintergreen with medicine or bathroom cleaner. Americans enjoy wintergreen and root beer flavor in their sweets. Personally, it's difficult for me to imagine not enjoying root beer. In order to provide a proper evaluation of Extra Dessert Delights Root Beer Float gum, I decided to start with a home made root beer float gold standard (vanilla ice cream and root beer). Root beer floats are cool, creamy, sweet, tingly, … [Read more...]

Stride Tropical Trance, artificially flavored sugar free gum, Flavor Review

Inside of Tropical Trance Pack

Be careful, because Stride Tropical Trance will hold you captive for a half hour. Tropical Trance has high flavor impact that lasts at least 20-30 minutes. This gum is shocking: high in sour, sweet, tropical flavor and cooling sensation. I'd describe the flavor as a very creamy mango with orange, pineapple, green cucumber and floral notes. The creamy notes are very high and I much prefer this gum after those flavor notes have dissipated. Twenty minutes into chewing Tropical Trance, I find it to be a delicious fruitty berry gum that is cooling. Since I've spent almost 20 years in the flavor business , I do not really like highly flavored food items. I feel I can taste the individual flavor aromatics. In this case it is a lactone, perhaps … [Read more...]

Trident Layers Orchard Peach & Ripe Mango flavor review

Trident Layers Chewing gum, Orchard Peach & Ripe Mango

As a flavor chemist, I have to applaud the flavorist who made this peach & mango flavor. This is a well-balanced, creamy, tropical, crisp, fruity peach mango flavor and would be very difficult to copy. As a consumer and mom, I am concerned about such high flavor load in a product that children would consume. Typically fruit flavors are a "top note" for beverages or fruit fillings that lose some potency during processing. In confection, though, added fruit flavors are the entire flavor system. Chewing gum in particular has an extremely high flavor load, perhaps 2% vs a piece of candy that has 0.2%.  Flavor load is high because it is desired that gum's flavor last 20 minutes. The United States government is very strict about what … [Read more...]

Orbit wildberry remix sugar free chewing gum review

Orbit Wildberry Remix

Often I hear "our world is getting smaller".  When people say that; they are referring to the ease of travel or transportation. How about food and flavor? When I visited Italy 10 years ago, a very popular confection & beverage flavor was forest fruits. Forest flavors is portrayed with pictures of blackberries, blueberries and raspberries and is always somewhat floral. My first impression of the Orbit wildberry remix is that it's forest fruits flavor from Europe. When I opened the packaged and smelled the gum, though, I changed my mind. Orbit Wildberry Remix smells just like grape soda or grape candy flavor for kids. Initially, the gum was juicy, sweet and flavorful. It reminded me of a berry flavored Starburst, and I love Starbursts. … [Read more...]

UP2U Mentos Gum MandarinStrawbery/Spearmint Review

UP2U Mandarin Strawberry Spearmint

This is the 2nd gum flavor pack from UP2U I am reviewing. As previously stated, I love the marketing of this new Mentos gum and find it new, fun & exciting. I wish I could say the same about mandarin strawberry flavor. It's an interesting concept for a gum flavor and seems better suited for an adult beverage. Strawberry lemonade is more mainstream and would most likely taste better. My biggest complaint about the strawberry mandarin flavor is the floral flavor, it made the gum perfumey. There were some green strawberry notes, woody mandarin character and orange follow through, but in general the floral note made it unappealing. The coolness level and lingering sensation was perfect.  At 5-6 minutes into the chew my mouth was … [Read more...]

Extra SmoothMint sugar free gum review

Smooth Mint

When I saw this new Extra gum at the store, I was not excited. Lately, Extra has launched new dessert gums and those have been fun: Strawberry Shortcake, Apple Pie, Key Lime Pie...Yum! Compared to those gums, smooth mint sounded bland. The package seemed unexciting, especially after just reviewing the new Stride Shaun White gum. The aroma of this Extra gum was not impressive. It was mentholic and minty with a slight dirty, ashy note. When I started chewing the gum, though, my opinion changed and I found this gum impressively smooth and minty. The gum had a slightly creamy, fruity  undertone that subtly smoothed the cool mentholic peppermint.   The creamy fruitiness lingered for an "extra long time" and kept the usual bitter/burning … [Read more...]

My thoughts on Children & Sugar Free Gum

Sugar free gum

I spent the last 7 years of my life primarily working on flavoring chewing gum. You wouldn't think chewing gum could occupy so much time, but it's an important market.  Chewing gum is typically composed of the following ingredients: flavors (1-3%) sweetener (60-80%) softeners (a small amount of glycerine or oil) gum base 20-30%  (rubber) As a parent and a flavor scientist who chewed 5-15 pieces of sugar-free gum a day, I have some concern over the ingredients in sugar-free gum. Sorbitol, the majority of the sweetener in sugar-free gum is my largest concern. I suffered many a day from gastrointestinal distress as a result of sorbitol. 10 grams/day for an adult  is enough to induce a laxative effect on the body. Therefore 8-10 … [Read more...]
