Apricot Tea

On a recent weekend get-away to Victoria, I encountered apricot tea at Murchies Tea & Coffee. Their apricot honey vanilla tea latte is out of this world. We do not have Murchies in the States, so I purchased a box of 50 apricot tea bags to take home with me. That was a mistake, I should have bought a case. Since that day, I have forgone my usual English Breakfast tea for an apricot tea with soy vanilla creamer. Murchie's apricot tea is not too fruity or sour like an herbal tea, but has a sweet, creamy, sweet apricot flavor tea nicely enhanced by black tea flavor. Apricot Honey Vanilla My husband tasted a sip of my apricot honey vanilla tea latte during our visit to Murchies. The sip ended up being "sharing". I did not willingly … [Read more...]

Peach Flavor

My Home Town Orangevale, California is home of some of the best peaches in the world, but I am biased because it is my hometown. Like most teenagers in Orangevale, my first job was at Tomich Bros. Orchard. Working at a peach orchard gave me an appreciation for hard work and the taste of a good variety of freshly picked peaches. As a child of the 1970's, I remember peach flavored sweets were not good. In fact peach flavored candies were thrown out because they had an odd heavy wine note. In the late 1980's this changed with the release of Snapple® Peach Ice Tea. For me, the peach flavor in Snapple® revolutionized peach flavors. Snapple Peach The flavor chemist that developed the Snapple® peach flavor contacted my employer to apply … [Read more...]

Dole Fruit Crisp, Peach Review

I regularly stock fruit cups and applesauce cups for the kids. These items are healthy, convenient snacks and meal sides. Recently, I saw a new item on the shelf in this section. This item is Dole Fruit Crisp.  I was turned off by the amount of packaging the product required and the message it sent: "fruit crisp is difficult to prepare; therefore we'll make it for you".  Once I tried the product and saw my child's response, I understood the advantage. It's easy, good and has nutritious ingredients.   A great snack or breakfast to have on hand for a child. Basically, this is a fruit filling cup (thickened with starch) that can be heated and served with an oat topping (oats, brown sugar, sunflower oil, flour, spices, lecithin, flavor and … [Read more...]

Trident Layers Orchard Peach & Ripe Mango flavor review

As a flavor chemist, I have to applaud the flavorist who made this peach & mango flavor. This is a well-balanced, creamy, tropical, crisp, fruity peach mango flavor and would be very difficult to copy. As a consumer and mom, I am concerned about such high flavor load in a product that children would consume. Typically fruit flavors are a "top note" for beverages or fruit fillings that lose some potency during processing. In confection, though, added fruit flavors are the entire flavor system. Chewing gum in particular has an extremely high flavor load, perhaps 2% vs a piece of candy that has 0.2%.  Flavor load is high because it is desired that gum's flavor last 20 minutes. The United States government is very strict about what … [Read more...]
