Greek Yogurt, Vanilla Flavored products

Greek Yogurt Vanilla flavored products

The yogurt aisle at the supermarket in the US has changed. In 2010, Greek yogurt accounted for 20% of total yogurt sales. (Chicago Tribune March 16, 2012).  Greek yogurt has a creamier texture, higher protein content, tarter/less sweet taste and higher cost than traditional yogurt. The consumer will pay more for this yogurt; in some cases $0.30-0.80 more per cup. If you are relatively new to Greek yogurt, following are taste comparisons of some of  the vanilla flavor products on the market. Greek Gods is my favorite product. I choose the low-fat version of this yogurt flavored with vanilla cinnamon orange.  It reminds me of a custard. Greek Gods makes a truly delicious, treat like product.  All flavors in this product are truly … [Read more...]

Fage Greek Yogurt Review

Fage Greek Yogurt

As a flavorist and food technologist, I have been extremely fortunate in my career. A large part of my work is tasting products. Evaluating Greek yogurts on the market has been a treat. Especially when it comes to Fage.  It is one of the more expensive yogurts on the market, sometimes listed at $1.89 and it is delicious. I recently tried two flavors (1) Strawberry with 2% milk fat and (2)Cherry Pomegranate with 0% milk fat. Fage yogurt is uniquely packaged, with two cups; one large cup for yogurt and one small cup for fruit. The serving suggestion is not to stir.  Therefore, I scooped out a little yogurt and dipped it in the fruit. The 2% milk fat Greek yogurt that came with the strawberry fruit was amazing: creamy like butter and … [Read more...]

Chobani Greek Yogurt Vanilla Review

Chobani Greek Yogurt, vanilla flavor

I was in love with Chobani Greek yogurt, until I tried vanilla flavor. The texture and creaminess of this yogurt is delicious, but the vanilla flavor is terrible. Vanilla is my favorite flavor,  I stock a 16 oz of Costco's vanilla extract in my kitchen . You can  use vanilla extract in about everything sweet: milk, hot cocoa, cakes, lattes, teas, cookies, etc. Vanilla enhances flavor and adds a nice creamy sweetness to foods and beverages.  The vanilla flavor used in the Chobani Greek yogurt did none of this.  Chobani vanilla yogurt started out sweet and beany, but had a terrible smokey, woody character that came on strong and lingered unpleasantly.  The vanilla flavor did not balance well with the tart yogurt. The ingredients in … [Read more...]

Chobani Greek Yogurt Strawberry fruit on the bottom review

Chobani Greek Yogurt Strawberry

I'm cheap. Therefore, even though I've heard people RAVE about Chobani Greek yogurt (because of the high protein), I still did not buy it. Greek yogurt is almost always 3-4X the price of regular yogurt. I have been missing out. Last week I tried the Yoplait Strawberry Greek style yogurt and liked the low sugar, high protein and creamy texture. Today I tried the  Strawberry Chobani Greek style yogurt and fell in love. This yogurt and flavor is absolutely delicious and good for you. Chobani is most likely more expensive because it uses evaporated cane juice instead of high fructose corn syrup and other all natural ingredients. The process to make Greek yogurt is also different than the standard yogurt at the grocery store. Thankfully, I was … [Read more...]

Yoplait Greek Strawberry Yogurt review

Yoplait Greek Yogurt, Strawberry

My close acquaintances know I have a sweet tooth.   Therefore, I usually have a homemade sweetened vanilla latte or caramel macchiato every morning.      I enjoy my sweetened latte with a muffin, toast with honey, yummy granola bar or  doughnut.    When I visited Italy, their breakfasts consisted of sweet pastries (even pie) with an espresso.   I loved breakfast in Italy. Because my breakfast isn't the healthiest, I tend to get hungry in the late morning.   My go to snack is almost always yogurt.  Yogurt is a healthy snack:  low in calories, high in calcium and has live bacteria. Yogurt is typically convenient and good in taste.  In the last five years there has been a movement towards Greek style yogurt.   Yogurt marketed … [Read more...]
