Limited Edition Apple Crisp Flavored Yoplait yogurt, flavor review

Apple Crisp Flavored Yoplait Yogurt

We have a heightened sense of smell when we are hungry. Our sense of smell is what allows us to perceive flavor in our food; hence when we plug our noses and chew cinnamon raisin toast, all we taste is sweet, but when we unplug our nose we taste the cinnamon and raisin. When I first tried the new limited edition Apple Crisp Yoplait yogurt, I was hungry. I could taste fresh apple pie with oatmeal/brown sugar crumble on top.  This yogurt is delicious and very balanced. The second time I ate this didn't catch-all the "nuances" that I did when I was hungry, but it is still just as delicious. The flavor in Apple Crisp Yoplait is amazing. I'm in awe of the flavor scientist that created this flavor. Apple flavor is fairly easy to create, … [Read more...]

Yoplait Simplait Yogurt, flavor review

Yoplait Simplait

Yoplait Simplait is "simply" the best non-Greek yogurt I have had. It has a wonderful custardy/creamy texture, the perfect tartness, a light cream cheese undertone and delicious flavors of jammy strawberry and buttery vanilla. I am in Awe! In general, processed foods have lengthy ingredient statements that confuse us consumers. This kind of thing keeps most of us preparing our own family meals. In one of my food science classes, the professor used a microwave dinner ingredient statement to explain additives. This microwave meal had 68 ingredients. How are we supposed to decipher all this information? Six simple ingredients is the Yoplait Simplait label, but flavor scientists know otherwise. Flavors can consist of one to several … [Read more...]

Ben & Jerry’s Greek Frozen Yogurt, flavor review

Ben & Jerry's Greek Frozen Yogurt

We can rely on Ben & Jerry's for delicious and fun frozen desserts. Greek Frozen yogurt is no exception and as the package states, it's "really Greekin good". Recently, I found two of the four Greek frozen yogurt flavors: Blueberry Vanilla Graham and Raspberry Fudge chunk. Ben & Jerry's Greek Frozen yogurt is easy to scoop, has a light texture (not too dense), is smooth and is not too cold when consumed. My family enjoyed both flavors, but preferred the Raspberry Fudge chunk. Chocolate always wins with my girls.  The raspberry has a nice natural flavor and tartness, it reminds me some of a sherbet flavor. Blueberry Vanilla Graham has a nice malty/buttery flavor from the graham pieces. In fact, the sweet buttery graham crust … [Read more...]

Greek Yogurt, Vanilla Flavored products

Greek Yogurt Vanilla flavored products

The yogurt aisle at the supermarket in the US has changed. In 2010, Greek yogurt accounted for 20% of total yogurt sales. (Chicago Tribune March 16, 2012).  Greek yogurt has a creamier texture, higher protein content, tarter/less sweet taste and higher cost than traditional yogurt. The consumer will pay more for this yogurt; in some cases $0.30-0.80 more per cup. If you are relatively new to Greek yogurt, following are taste comparisons of some of  the vanilla flavor products on the market. Greek Gods is my favorite product. I choose the low-fat version of this yogurt flavored with vanilla cinnamon orange.  It reminds me of a custard. Greek Gods makes a truly delicious, treat like product.  All flavors in this product are truly natural … [Read more...]

Fage Greek Yogurt Review

Fage Greek Yogurt

As a flavorist and food technologist, I have been extremely fortunate in my career. A large part of my work is tasting products. Evaluating Greek yogurts on the market has been a treat. Especially when it comes to Fage.  It is one of the more expensive yogurts on the market, sometimes listed at $1.89 and it is delicious. I recently tried two flavors (1) Strawberry with 2% milk fat and (2)Cherry Pomegranate with 0% milk fat. Fage yogurt is uniquely packaged, with two cups; one large cup for yogurt and one small cup for fruit. The serving suggestion is not to stir.  Therefore, I scooped out a little yogurt and dipped it in the fruit. The 2% milk fat Greek yogurt that came with the strawberry fruit was amazing: creamy like butter and … [Read more...]

Chobani Greek Yogurt Vanilla Review

Chobani Greek Yogurt, vanilla flavor

I was in love with Chobani Greek yogurt, until I tried vanilla flavor. The texture and creaminess of this yogurt is delicious, but the vanilla flavor is terrible. Vanilla is my favorite flavor,  I stock a 16 oz of Costco's vanilla extract in my kitchen . You can  use vanilla extract in about everything sweet: milk, hot cocoa, cakes, lattes, teas, cookies, etc. Vanilla enhances flavor and adds a nice creamy sweetness to foods and beverages.  The vanilla flavor used in the Chobani Greek yogurt did none of this.  Chobani vanilla yogurt started out sweet and beany, but had a terrible smokey, woody character that came on strong and lingered unpleasantly.  The vanilla flavor did not balance well with the tart yogurt. The ingredients in Chobani … [Read more...]

Trader Joe’s soy yogurt strawberry flavor review

Trader Joe's Soy Yogurt

There has been a lot a press about soy's heart benefits and possible positive affects on women's health http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/news/20110630/benefits-of-soy-a-mixed-bag.    In general it is best to have a varied diet and try new things. This is, however, the first cultured soy product(a yogurt style non-dairy food) I have tried, Usually, it is the beany, cardboard taste of soy products that sways me towards the more familiar dairy products. I was pleasantly impressed with soy yogurt, though. Although, there is a distinct soy taste, it isn't unpleasant and blends well with the creamy, tart character of the yogurt. There is a green, sour, slightly floral fruity note that is supposed to be strawberry flavor. It isn't a distinct … [Read more...]

Chobani Greek Yogurt Strawberry fruit on the bottom review

Chobani Greek Yogurt Strawberry

I'm cheap. Therefore, even though I've heard people RAVE about Chobani Greek yogurt (because of the high protein), I still did not buy it. Greek yogurt is almost always 3-4X the price of regular yogurt. I have been missing out. Last week I tried the Yoplait Strawberry Greek style yogurt and liked the low sugar, high protein and creamy texture. Today I tried the  Strawberry Chobani Greek style yogurt and fell in love. This yogurt and flavor is absolutely delicious and good for you. Chobani is most likely more expensive because it uses evaporated cane juice instead of high fructose corn syrup and other all natural ingredients. The process to make Greek yogurt is also different than the standard yogurt at the grocery store. Thankfully, I was … [Read more...]

Yoplait Greek Strawberry Yogurt review

Yoplait Greek Yogurt, Strawberry

My close acquaintances know I have a sweet tooth.   Therefore, I usually have a homemade sweetened vanilla latte or caramel macchiato every morning.      I enjoy my sweetened latte with a muffin, toast with honey, yummy granola bar or  doughnut.    When I visited Italy, their breakfasts consisted of sweet pastries (even pie) with an espresso.   I loved breakfast in Italy. Because my breakfast isn't the healthiest, I tend to get hungry in the late morning.   My go to snack is almost always yogurt.  Yogurt is a healthy snack:  low in calories, high in calcium and has live bacteria. Yogurt is typically convenient and good in taste.  In the last five years there has been a movement towards Greek style yogurt.   Yogurt marketed as Greek Style … [Read more...]

Dannon Danimals Smoothie, Swingin Strawberry Banana Flavored review

Yogurt Smoothies

I have a four year old little girl who loves the pink "yogi milk"  with the monkey on it; Danimals smoothies. Before tasting it, my general  impression was that it must be too sugary, like the other kids yogurts on the market. To me, yogurt is supposed to be healthy.   It is a good source of protein, calcium, healthy bacteria and it should not be laden down with sugar.  Since I was raised by a dairy farmer turned health inspector, I am most definitely pro-dairy. I buy milk, cheese, yogurt, half n half,  sour cream, whip cream and real butter. Sometimes my husband purchases cool whip (non-dairy!) when I'm not with him, but other than that, I opt for real dairy products.  My husband claims cool-whip tastes good. I am pleasantly … [Read more...]
