Doritos Limited Edition: Salsa Rio & Sour Cream Onion flavor review

Doritos Tortilla Chips, limited edition flavors

It's Superbowl Sunday and I am a huge fan of the snacks and the food us Americans enjoy today.  There are special displays in grocery stores set up for people buying food for the Big Game. Usually they are built out of beer and soda with lots of snacks intertwined. I managed to walk by the Oreo shaped footballs, but couldn't resist trying the new Doritos flavors. Doritos are always "delicious".  I think it's the perfect blend of salt, cheese, MSG, disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate that this brand of chips has. Used in very small amounts, flavor enhancers (MSG, disodium insinuate and disodium guanylate) give a delicious full-bodied flavor to products. My entire family enjoyed the sour cream & onion chips. Surprisingly … [Read more...]

Pretzel Crisps review, white chocolate & peppermint flavored

White Chocolate Pretzel Crisps with Peppermint

These yummy pretzels were another good find at Target. I honestly didn't think too much of them when I saw them. Pretzels and peppermint don't sound good.  However, it was nearly impossible to stop eating these Pretzel Crisps once I started. They were so good.  The buttery crisp, salty pretzel blends well with the sweet, milky creamy vanilla coating. The cool, sweet peppermint candy compliments the buttery creaminess perfectly. Interestingly enough, no FD&C colors were used in this snack. The manufacturer, Snack Factory, used beet juice for coloring in the peppermint candy. Traditionally, FD&C colors are used in candy, they are brighter, stronger, easier to use, and less expensive. Lately, consumers are looking for more … [Read more...]

Special K cracker chips, sour cream & onion review

Special K Cracker Chips

With obesity on the rise, who doesn't want healthier snack options? Kellogg's Special K just launched a new cracker chip baked snack for consumers looking for lower calorie, healthier snack options. Trouble is lower calorie, healthier snack options just don't taste good. Usually, I find problems with the texture, the chips don't crunch right or remind me of styrofoam.  Special K cracker chips have a surprisingly good texture, crispy & crunchy with only the slightest styrofoam character. The taste of the Kellogg's Special K cracker chip, sour cream & onion flavor needs to be fixed, though.   The first chip I tasted wasn't too bad, there were some decent sour cream notes, but when I ate a few I had a bad aftertaste in my mouth. … [Read more...]

Hawaiian Hurricane Popcorn Mochi Crunch & Nori Review

Hawaiian Hurricane Popcorn , Mochi crunch & Nori

The other day my husband came home very excited. He had a surprise for me and couldn't wait to give it to me. My first thought was that he been to the neighboring city that has my favorite chocolates, See's candies, and picked up a box. Therefore, when he gave me a bag of Hawaiian popcorn, I wasn't as excited as I should have been. Hawaii Popcorn Company, whose motto is "We're Poppin in Paradise", has a delicious popcorn product. Preparing this microwave popcorn product was a touch more involved than standard popcorn. Enclosed in the bag of Hurricane popcorn came a microwave popcorn bag, a bag of mochi & nori, a bag of buttery topping and a plastic bag where you mix all (the hurricane). It was very easy to prepare and it was great … [Read more...]

Lay’s Garden Tomato & Basil Flavored Potato Chips Review

Lay's Garden Tomato and Basil flavored Potato Chips

Lay's could have called these potato chips pizza flavored, but instead they called them garden tomato and basil flavored.  It must have been the marketing department, not the flavor scientist, that chose garden tomato and basil.  The flavor is distinctly pizza.   By pizza I mean this chip has a sweet malty/bread note like a pizza crust, a cooked tomato character like pizza sauce, an Italian Seasoning note (more oregano like than basil),and a cheese note. The package of Lay's garden tomato and basil advertised the link to the soup recipe that inspired Garden Tomato Basil flavored chips:  http://www.fritolay.com/recipes/recipe/garden-tomato-and-basil-soup Comparing the recipes for tomato soup and pizza sauce; there exist … [Read more...]

Tim’s Vlasic Dill Pickle Flavored Potato Chips review

Tim's dill chip ingredient label & Nutritional statement

I don't love dill pickles, nor am I pregnant with strange cravings;  but I do love Tim's Cascade Style Potato chips.   Tim's chips are extra thick and crunchy and always delicious.  My favorite chips from Tim's are the reduced fat, because they taste like regular potato chips.    Tim's is well-known for their flavored  chips, especially the Hot Jalapeno Seasoned chips.  The jalapeno chips ranked # 1 snack food on Taquitos.net  ( http://www.taquitos.net/snacks.php?snack_code=415) I can't recall seeing a dill pickle flavored chip before, but when I googled it, 31 items came up.   This is the first time I have tried a dill pickle flavored product and I like it.   The aroma of the open bag is  fresh dill and the taste follows … [Read more...]

Blue Diamond Almonds BOLD Wasabi & Soy Sauce review

Blue Diam Almonds, BOLD Wasabi & Soy Sauce

I'm glad the container of these almonds is labeled "smart snacking", because I have almost finished the entire container. These seasoned almonds are amazingly delicious. The aroma off the container is nutty, roasted and spicy ( nasal clearing).  The taste is a wonderful balance of sweet, salty, roasted notes with the pungency of wasabi.  There is no vegetative/broccoli like off notes that wasabi or horseradish sometimes have.  The savory character of the almonds balance beautifully with the heat of the wasabi. The delicious savory character is described as Umami  in flavor science.  Umami means "pleasant savory taste" in Japanese  and is usually attributed to glutamates or nucleotides.   This boldly seasoned almond does not … [Read more...]

Lowrey’s Bacon Curls – Microwave Pork Rinds (Chicharrones) review

Chicharrones

I thought of my husband when I saw this product, he loves Pork Rinds.    He would only eat bacon if he knew he would still live long enough to walk his daughters down the aisle.  When vacationing in Mexico, we purchased chicharrones (pork rinds) on the streets , they were seasoned,  fried pork skins.  It appears from the label that the mirowavable version of these are nearly the same thing.  My assumption is that they are more sanitary than the chicharrones we consumed from the street vendor in Mexico. My first thought is that these are the perfect snack for someone on the Atkins diet:   less than one carb.    If you are watching your sodium intake, though, they are not a good diet choice.   One bag has 52% of your daily intake … [Read more...]
