Stride Shaun White mintacular artificially flavored sugar free chewing gum

Mintacular? Shaun White is spectacular, but the chewing gum mintacular is not. It warms anyone's heart to hear the story of  Shaun White overcoming a heart defect and eventually become an Olympic athlete. Mintacular, however, is just ANOTHER spearmint and melon artificially flavored chewing gum. The flavor reminds me of  a cleaning compound or a shampoo, it is very cosmetic. The aqua color seems a bit cosmetic as well. A current trend is spearmint gum is to combine it with an artificial melon flavor. Spearmint gums from  Stride, Trident and Mentos all have this flavor blend. Wrigley 5 Rain and Ice Breaker Ice Cube spearmint gums have an authentic spearmint flavor. Spearmint and melon flavored gums on the market are reliant on … [Read more...]

Sauté Express Land O Lakes, Seasoned Butter & Olive Oil Starter, flavor review

Mother's Helper Working moms try to do it all, myself included. Nine years into motherhood, I've concluded, that I can not do it all. I need help. Sometimes I ask for help, hire help or prepare simpler meals. Simple meals tend to lack taste and nutritional. Sauté Express is a unique "helper" and I wonder if the convenience is worth it. My Impression An average cook will have a difficult time preparing a better blend than Land O Lakes (It's better than anything I could come up with in the kitchen). Sauté Express Garlic & Herb is impressive. Sauté Express combines butter, olive oil, garlic, spices, salt, pepper, herbs and  lemon in one little square. The balance of garlic flavor with the other subtle flavors is amazing. The … [Read more...]

Jell-O Pumpkin Spice instant pudding & pie filling, flavor review

Kids and Jell-O Time to put my kids to work! A great way to get kids in the kitchen preparing food is Jell-O instant pie filling. In the case of pumpkin spice, it's an opportunity for my children to make their first pie, Jell-O pudding pumpkin pie. Before preparing the pie filling,we made a graham cracker crust, using a recipe from www.food.com. It took about 15 minutes to make this crust.  Once the crust began to cool, my older daughter followed the directions on the package of Jello-O and  made a traditional pudding pie. She used a crank hand mixer; so I needn't worry about her getting hurt by an electric mixer. My Impression The pie looks delicious, reminiscent of a traditional custard pumpkin pie, but with about 1/8 of the … [Read more...]

Almond ROCA® Cream, an indulgent wine flavor review

Roca® Cream or Baileys®? Almond ROCA® Cream, is reminiscent of a cream liqueur: a sweet, creamy flavored high alcohol beverage. In many ways, Almond ROCA® Cream is similar to Baileys®Irish Cream. Baileys® is a sweetened whiskey and cream beverage that has 17% alcohol by volume; while Almond ROCA® Cream is a sweetened wine and cream beverage that has 14% alcohol by volume. ROCA® Cream is best served like Baileys®: over ice mixed with milk, in coffee, or over ice cream. Flavor Creation A flavor scientist would blend a Baileys® flavor by mixing vanilla, chocolate and cream flavor. A flavor for a ROCA® Cream would consist of almond flavor, chocolate flavor and toffee flavor. Toffee flavor includes flavor aromatics like Furaneol and 3,4, … [Read more...]

Darigold Pumpkin Spice Egg Nog, flavor review

Egg Nog Lattes Just when I thought I could not stand another pumpkin flavored product, I find this pumpkin spice egg nog from Darigold. A seasonal weakness of mine is egg nog lattes and I have been know to hoard several 1/2 gallon containers in my frig, so I can have these delicious warm beverages way into late January. I am happy to get a "jump start" on the season with this new pumpkin spice egg nog; even though pumpkin is a flavor that has begun to wear out its welcome. Food writers are indicating that pumpkin risks falling into the ranks of flavors such as pomegranate. http://bites.today.com/_news/2012/10/02/14181734-in-defense-of-pumpkin-products-that-get-the-flavor-right?lite Dairies prepare for the holiday season late spring/early … [Read more...]

Limited Edition Apple Crisp Flavored Yoplait yogurt, flavor review

The Sense of Smell We have a heightened sense of smell when we are hungry. Our sense of smell is what allows us to perceive flavor in our food; hence when we plug our noses and chew cinnamon raisin toast, all we taste is sweet, but when we unplug our nose we taste the cinnamon and raisin.     My Impression When I first tried the new limited edition Apple Crisp Yoplait yogurt, I was hungry. I could taste fresh apple pie with oatmeal/brown sugar crumble on top. This yogurt is delicious and very balanced. The second time I ate this yogurt, I did not catch-all the "nuances" that I did when I was hungry, but it is still just as delicious. The flavor in Apple Crisp Yoplait is amazing. I'm in awe of the flavor scientist that … [Read more...]

Eggo® Waffles Seasons: Pumpkin Spice, limited edition, Flavor Review

Our Sense of Smell I love how the house smells when I bake a pumpkin pie. The smell brings back good memories of Thanksgiving with family. I remember my parents healthy & energetic, my grandmother managing the event and my cousins & siblings playing our annual flag football game. Our sense of smell is the strongest sense of memory. "When nothing else subsists from the past, after the people are dead, after the things are broken and scattered· the smell and taste of things remain poised a long time, like souls· bearing resiliently" -Marcel Proust "The Remembrance of Things Past" My Impression Eggo® waffles has captured my Thanksgiving memories with their limited edition pumpkin spice waffle. Pumpkin Spice is one of my … [Read more...]

Yoplait Simplait Yogurt, flavor review

Yoplait Simplait is "simply" the best non-Greek yogurt I have had. It has a wonderful custardy/creamy texture, the perfect tartness, a light cream cheese undertone and delicious flavors of jammy strawberry and buttery vanilla. I am in Awe! In general, processed foods have lengthy ingredient statements that confuse us consumers. This kind of thing keeps most of us preparing our own family meals. In one of my food science classes, the professor used a microwave dinner ingredient statement to explain additives. This microwave meal had 68 ingredients. How are we supposed to decipher all this information? Six simple ingredients is the Yoplait Simplait label, but flavor scientists know otherwise. Flavors can consist of one to several … [Read more...]

Starbucks VIA Ready Brew Pumpkin Spice Latte, flavor review

Starbucks Starbucks President, Howard Schultz states,"we believe you should never be without great coffee". Amen. I am a faithful Starbucks customer. I know when I order a coffee at a Starbucks store, it will always taste amazing. Starbucks unflavored coffee VIA are excellent, the perfect accompaniment on a camping trip; where there is no coffee maker. Flavored coffee VIA is not always so  perfect. Balance is difficult to achieve. Often the flavors pop out, taste artificial and are not balanced. Milk fat flavor Pumpkin Spice latte (PSL) is no exception. There are way too many milk fat notes (capric acid, caprylic acid, lauric acid) popping out of this ready brew mix. Drinking the VIA Pumpkin Spice latte, leaves sour, fatty milk notes … [Read more...]

Planters NUT·rition Peanut butter with Energy Mix, Flavor Review

Should Peanut Butter be loaded with flavor? Legally, peanut butter is a food prepared by grinding roasted peanuts and has no more than 10% of the weight of ingredients as seasonings and stabilizing ingredients. The United States goes on to say (21 CFR164.150) that artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, chemical preservatives and color additives are not suitable for peanut butter. Peanut butter is a nutritious food and it should stay that way. Planters is offering the consumer a little something different: NUT·rition peanut butter with energy mix.  It comes in three flavors: Cinnamon Raisin Granola Nut Berry Nut Banana Granola Nut The NUT·rition line from Planters is a brand that started with nut … [Read more...]
