Should Peanut Butter be loaded with flavor? Legally, peanut butter is a food prepared by grinding roasted peanuts and has no more than 10% of the weight of ingredients as seasonings and stabilizing ingredients. The United States goes on to say (21 CFR164.150) that artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, chemical preservatives and color additives are not suitable for peanut butter. Peanut butter is a nutritious food and it should stay that way.
Planters is offering the consumer a little something different: NUT·rition peanut butter with energy mix. It comes in three flavors:
- Cinnamon Raisin Granola Nut
- Berry Nut
- Banana Granola Nut
The NUT·rition line from Planters is a brand that
- started with nut mixes(http://www.planters.com/varieties/nutnutritionmixes.aspx)
- moved to bars (http://www.planters.com/varieties/nutnutritionbars.aspx)
- and is now a peanut butter(http://www.planters.com/varieties/nutritionpb.aspx)
Personally, I enjoy the NUT·rition mixes, because I am a fan of dried fruit and nuts. I am not a fan of the NUT·rition peanut butter. There is not enough dried fruit and the flavor impact is too high. The best part about the NUT·rition Peanut butter is the rice crisps that are in the granola nut blends. The crisps are a nice addition to the sticky, heavy peanut butter.
In the mid 1990’s I had a project to flavor peanut butter. It is not easy to flavor peanut butter and takes an unusually high amount of flavor to add aroma to peanut butter. Thankfully, the peanut butter project went away. NUT·rition peanut butter is the first flavored peanut butter I have tasted since then. Anyway, it was not good then and it is not good now. Peanut butter does not release flavor well and the result is an over flavored product. Banana NUT·rition is the most over flavored, with Cinnamon Raisin coming in second. Berry nut does not seem over flavored.
After trying the Banana granola nut peanut butter, the taste of iso Amyl acetate lingered in my mouth unpleasantly for 10-15 minutes. Iso Amy acetate is the characterizing component of banana flavor and is found naturally in many fruits. In the flavor lab I have a 99% solution of iso Amyl acetate. It’s a good flavor component at low levels, but is also useful as a solvent (to remove paint from my daughter’s pants). Do I want to serve my child peanut butter with a high load of flavor? No thanks.
NUT·rition, why didn’t you launch a ready to eat meal with peanut butter, trail mix and crackers; like go picnic (http://www.gopicnic.com/Sunbutter-Crackers)? NUT·rition, Peanut butter doesn’t seem to fit your brand well. I am not impressed with NUT·rition flavored peanut butter.
NUT·rition Peanut Butter is at Target for $3.99/ 12 oz jar.
