My daughter introduced me to white cheddar popcorn and now it’s a staple in our pantry. Occasionally, we branch out and have microwave butter flavor popcorn, but white cheddar is our favorite. On a recent visit to the supermarket, we found Orville Redenbacher had a microwave white cheddar flavor popcorn for $1. What a great deal; compared to $3 for bagged popped corn.
There is a bit of prep work involved microwave popcorn as opposed to bagged popcorn. Minimal prep work for the reward of warm, pleasant smelling popcorn. Orville Redenbacher supplies a White Cheddar Seasoning pack to sprinkle on the popcorn when popped. It is very easy to prepare. The downside is that it smells very cheesy, almost like the “dirty feet” cheese. Unless you really like a lot of flavor, I highly recommend using only about 3/4 of the seasoning pack.
In fact, the first time I made the popcorn, I used too much seasoning and found it offensive. It was overly sour, metallic, way too cheesy and tasted yeasty. From that batch of popcorn, my daughter has decided she doesn’t like the microwave popcorn and prefers the bagged type. First impressions are important.
When I apply less of the white seasoning pack to the popcorn, it is delicious: perfectly cheesy & salty. Much better than the stale, oxidized tasting bagged popcorn I buy. In fact, until I had the fresh popped, I didn’t even realize how bad my favorite snack of bagged white cheddar popcorn really is. My daughter is still traumatized by the over flavored popcorn I gave her earlier in the week. I have videotaped her eating popcorn for your enjoyment.
Orville Redenbacher has released several new flavors recently: salt & vinegar, extra cheese, cheddar cheese and spicy nacho. I look forward to trying more of these popcorn and found the white cheddar flavor (when lightly applied) very good.
